With the release of Murders at Karlov Manor on Feb. 9th the newest competitive Magic: The Gathering season is upon us! This time, it’s all about STANDARD. Standard RCQs, Regional Championships, Store Championships, and more!
Season of Standard
The Standard format has seen a lot of changes over the past few years. The entire competitive MTG circuit was rebuilt from the ground up, Standard rotation changed from a set rotating every 2 years to every 3 years, and there are more ways to play MTG than ever before. Starting in 2024, Wizards of the Coast is helping Standard stand out amongst its peers with a plethora of local events, promotional cards, and major (and I mean MAJOR) tournaments. Let’s dig into the details!
Murders at Karlov Manor Prerelease – Feb 2nd & 3rd
Join us at Gamers Grove on February 2nd at 7pm & February 3rd at 5:30pm to help us figure out who dunnit! Each player will receive one Murders at Karlov Manor Prerelease kit comprised of 6 Play booster packs, one promotional card, one special 20-sided die, and plenty of helpful tokens to play your games with. Everyone gets about 45 minutes to build a 40-card deck from the contents of their prerelease kit. With that deck we play a friendly tournament where we all get to explore the new cards together and try to solve a mystery murder!
The Return of Standard Showdown
Are you looking for another way to compete or get reps in with Standard decks? Then look no further! Starting every Tues at 6pm after the release of Murders at Karlov Manor, Standard Showdown is back! Standard Showdown is a weekly competitive Standard event with pack-per-win prizing and special Showdown-specific promotional cards. Don’t miss out on these limited-time promos and the excitement of weekly competition.
These events will be run alongside normal Friday Night Magic Standard, so you can jam Standard games twice a week!
Stepping Up with Standard
Standard Showdown and FNM are awesome ways to hone your skills but… to what end? Gamers Grove has the answer to that question as well. Murders at Karlov Manor is kicking off the Standard Regional Championship season which means we’ll be hosting our very own Standard Store Championship *and* Standard Regional Championship Qualifier! These two events are where you can show your mettle against the best in the area.
The Store Championship in March comes with special promotional cards you can only get through the event and comes with the prestigious title of Store Champion. These promos are Mortify for participation, Angel of Despair for top 8, and a full-art Dauthi Voidwalker for winning the whole thing!
The Standard RCQ on Feb 24th is the big one though. With this RCQ we’ll be hosting a cash prize payout for all top 8 participants and the winner will become qualified for the next Regional Championship in Denver, Colorado. If you do well at the RC in Colorado, you could find yourself on the MTG Pro Tour and even possibly the MTG World Championship. If you have a competitive spirit, this is the event to kickstart your story. Check out the official Wizards announcement to learn more about the RCQ season and to see the sweet promos you could win!
