Pokémon League Challenges: Everything You Need To Know

Gamers Grove’s first ever Pokémon League Challenge is this weekend! To help prepare our new trainers for the League Challenge, Stewart goes over everything you need to know in this article. If you want to catch ‘em all, this event is your first step toward earning Championship Points!

So, you’ve got a deck, you attend our Gamers Grove Pokémon League events every Saturday, and you’ve got your eyes set on bigger and better prizes. The Pokémon League Challenge is the next step in your trainer career! But what should you expect from one of these events? Let’s dig into a few common questions so that you know exactly what to expect when you sign up for a League Challenge.

Where is the Pokémon League Challenge and when is it scheduled?

At Gamers Grove, a Pokémon League Challenge will be held the first Saturday of every month at 6pm! If you ever question the date or time of the event you can always check out our event calendar. The next event at the time of writing is October 7th, 2023 at 6pm.

What if I’ve never played in a Pokémon event?

First off, welcome! Second, just let the staff at Gamers Grove know and we can set you up with a Pokémon Play! Account pretty quickly. If you play Pokémon TCG Live then you can use your account information from there to sign up in our paper events!

How do I know if my deck is okay to bring to the League Challenge?

Pokémon League Challenges use the Standard format. This means that every card in your deck should be marked “E”, “F”, or "G" as everything labeled “D” and older has rotated out of the format. For more information about Standard legality, check out the official Pokemon page. Beyond card legality, make sure your deck is 60 cards and you’re good to go! If you find yourself needing sleeves, dice, or deck boxes for your deck don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Make sure your Pokemon cards are standard legal. This image shows you where to find the set information on the Pokemon card.

How many games should I expect to play?

Pokémon League Challenges are best of one, which means that you and your opponent will only play one (1) single game each round. Rounds are 30 minutes long so you should have plenty of time to get a good game in! The number of rounds will depend on how many trainers show up but typically expect between 3 and 4 rounds. So, to answer the question, expect to play 3 or 4 games.

What kind of prizes can I expect?

The big question! For playing in our Pokémon League Challenge, you get one (1) Pokémon Play! Point just for showing up! Then, Pokémon Championship Points are awarded based on your placement at the end of the tournament. Below is a chart breaking down the prize spread with information from the official Pokemon website:

1st Place

15 Championship Points

2nd Place

12 Championship Points

3rd & 4th Place

10 Championship Points

In addition to the above prizes, we’ll also be awarding every player with 1 pack per win in the event! For example, if you go 2-1 (two wins, one loss) you’ll walk out with 2 packs! If you’re afraid of paying to enter but then losing every round, don’t worry, you’ll still get a pack on us.

What if I have more questions?

If you find yourself with a few questions that this blog post didn’t quite answer, feel more than welcome to join our Discord where you can ask Gamers Grove staff any question!
